DirtCubs and DirtMasters in action

Start time

Thursday evenings

Juniors/Parents/Beginners

MTBA DirtCubs ages 3-7; DirtMasters category ages 8-14.

Rego from 5:30pm with racing at 5:45pm. Race time is around 30 minutes. (For Round One please allow time for AusCycling registration if required).

DirtCubs and DirtMasters will race at the same time but on different courses with a common start/finish line.

Seniors

Seniors category will not be conducted in 2024/25.

Location

For the 2024/25 series we will be racing at the Walmer Forest (Baco) trails. This area is centred on the new trailhead (Walmer Day Visitor Area) and provides suitably challenging loops for both the DirtCubs and DirtMasters categories. The common start/finish straight will provide passing zones to make sure younger and older riders can compete together.

For this series parking will be available off Daltons Road. The trails are adjacent to the carpark.

We’ll have signs out on the day to help you find your way.

Junior action

The course

The course is approx 1km for DirtCubs and 2km for juniors and is beginner friendly.

If you have a well-serviced mountain bike, basic bike skills and basic fitness you’ll be just fine.

Race format

Races will be 20 to 30 mins for juniors/parents/beginners.

The season will include two ITTs (Individual Time Trials) to seed riders for the handicap races in the series. The remaining 8 races in the series will be handicapped events.

Series points

Each rider is awarded 1 point for entering and 1 point for every rider that they finish ahead of. Eg. First place in a race of 20 riders will get 1 point for entering + 19 points for the 19 riders they finished ahead of.

DNFs get 1 point.

Your best 7 results (including up to 1 ITT) count towards your points tally, so if you can’t get to every round you still have a chance of winning. The rider with the highest points tally wins.

You’ll be given a race plate at your first race, and you’ll need to bring them to each race. Forgetting race plates incurs a $10 penalty to go towards headache treatment for the timing team.

Entry fees

  • Juniors – gold coin per round donation is appreciated

A valid AusCycling license is required. For Dirt Crits the Race Off Road category is recommended as this provides insurance cover for off road racing events. It’s cheaper to become a Rocky Riders member than to buy event licenses. If you are brand new to mountain biking you can always sign up for an four week trial membership at no cost. Note that the trial membership is only available once.

Email us if you’d like any advice about buying your AusCycling licence.

You will also need to obtain a “free” ticket for each round of DirtCrits. This makes registration and our Covid safety plan much more manageable. Tickets can be purchased via the Auscycling events portal.

Race cancellation and bulletins

Races will be cancelled on days of extreme fire danger/weather. Cancellations will be posted on Facebook by 4pm on race day.
